Darfur and Immigrants in Chicago
Who plans two important demonstrations on the same day in the same city? In Chicago, both a rally against violence in Darfur and a demonstration promoting the cause of immigrants are occurring on May 1st. The news coverage will probably point out the racial/ethnic/religious disparities evident by which groups are supporting which rallies. Instead of lawmakers being able to focus their attention on one important event, they have to divide their attention, something our elected officials do not always do with ease. I hope the lawmakers in this county hear two important messages in surround sound: BOTH DISCRIMINATION AND SYSTEMATIC KILLING ARE UNACCEPTABLE. Intervene today to establish peace in Darfur and intervene at home to create reasonable immigration reform. We are all humans no matter our skin color, place of birth or nationality. Everyone deserves the basic human right to live safely, with reasonable wages, and the possibility that the dream of a better life may become a reality.
(Too bad it's supposed to rain all day)
